You made the decision that your next family vacation will be a cruise. On top of that, you know that the Disney Cruise Line is the cruise line for your family. Next on the list is deciding what the best Disney Cruise ship of your unique family. Did you know that at the time of writing this, there are eight ships to choose from? So how do you find the right one?
We have sailed on four Disney cruises as a family of five. Each ship is unique and has different things to offer to each family. From the ports of call to the time of year, along with what each unique ship offers, there is a perfect ship for your family.
Ports of call
One of the top things that will potentially limit you on the best ship for your family is where you want to sail to or from. For example, if you want to sail out of San Diego, you are looking at either the Disney Magic or the Disney Wonder. If you’re sailing to Alaska, you are on the Disney Wonder as well. Florida will give you the most options for different ships between their two ports, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale. If you want to sail somewhere unique, let’s say Singapore, you get the Disney Adventure.
Another thing that will determine what ship options you have is the length of your cruise. For example, the Disney Wish only does three-day and four-day cruises from Port Canaveral. Their other ships offer five-day and seven-day crusies and the ships you can choose from vary from year to year.
Now that we talked about some of the things that will limit the ship you get to sail on. Let’s talk about each ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. As I said earlier, there are currently eight ships in the Disney Fleet. I am going to name them, starting with the oldest to the newest ships.
Disney Magic
Disney Wonder
Disney Dream
Disney Fantasy
Disney Wish
Disney Treasure
Disney Destiny
Disney Adventure
By looking at these ships online, you might think they all look the same. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Each ship has its own unique experience that make them different from even its sister ship(s). I am going to go down and talk about all the different dining experiences, family activities, Kids clubs, and adult entertainment too. I want to start by sharing what is the same on all the ships.
Every Disney ship has
- Nursery – ages 6 months to 3 years
- Kids Club – ages 3 years to 10 years (must be potty trained)
- Edge – 11 years – 14 years
- Vibe – 14-17 years
- Adult-only area – 18+ only
- Disney Characters
- Broadway-style shows (but the shows vary ship to ship)
- Fireworks at sea
- Family-friendly pools with waterslides
- First-Run Disney Movies
- Free room service (be sure to order Mickey ice cream bars)
- Spa (additional cost)
- Preludes (popcorn outside of the theaters (this is an additional cost)
Magic Class: Disney Magic and Disney Wonder
Now that we know what each ship has, let’s get into what makes each ship different. We will start with the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder because they are sister ships. They are the same size and have a lot of the same amenities. These two ships sail from Galvastion, San Diego, Alaska, and Australia. They offer a variety of different lengths from three days to 14-day repositioning cruises. These are the oldest two ships in the Disney lineup and the smallest. Most rooms accommodate four guests easily; however, if you need to get five family members in a room, you need to stay in their Deluxe Family Oceanview with Verandah Stateroom or a suite. This will put these rooms at a high cost for families of 5 or more right out the door, and you can only get a balcony room, or you will have to get connecting rooms. Both of these ships have a buffet called Cabana’s. Both ships have 3 rotational dining venues as well.

Dream Class: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy
Keeping with going from the oldest to newest, we have arrived at the Dream Class. The Dream class consists of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Making them the sister ships in this class. The Dream class is the first in the Disney fleet to have a water coaster at sea. So let’s look at what makes the Disney Dream and Fantasy the same and different.
I will start with the rooms again. One fun thing that is only on the Dream class is that their interior rooms have a magic porthole in them. This unique design shows you a live feel of the outside digitally, and throughout the day, different Disney Characters stop by for a visit. The next thing I want to mention is that the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have more room options for families of five. They have ocean view and balcony rooms that sleep five. This gives you more options for room types and the ability to stay in one room for a lower cost.
Now, let’s get into the fun stuff about what is similar and different between these sister ships.

The Dream class is the second class of ship Disney designed. They are larger than the Magic class we read about before. We sailed on the Disney Fantasy in December 2024, and it was such an amazing time. We had a balcony room for five, and one thing I wish we had done was get two rooms instead of one. On a seven-day cruise, that is a lot of time to have five people in a small space. The entertainment and pools keep our family entertained the whole time and the kids’ clubs were a lifesaver to allow us parents to get some adult time.
After reading about the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Are one of these Disney Cruise Ships is the best for your family?
Wish Class: Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and Disney Destiny
Last in this post, we are going to go over the Wish class ships. Disney’s newest (at time of posting) class ships. These are the newest of the new, and overall, there will be 4 ships in this class. Right now, only 3 are sailing, and the next ship is expected in 2027. We do not have a name for this ship at this time. The wish class was a whole new experience, unlike any of the past Disney ships. So you will see that many of the spaces on this ship class have been completely redesigned.
