Designing a home is an art but you do not need to be an artist to design your own home. You can spend hours on Pinterest and Tumblr and note down the designs you want to incorporate in your place. But as it is rightly said that people make mistakes, there are some common mistakes that everybody commits while decorating their houses. We have identified some of them and have come up with an entire list along with their solutions. If you have already started panicking because you think that the solutions are going to shake your monthly budget, then think again. Now, let’s see what are the biggest home decor mistakes and how you can solve them.
- Too much of action – It is very obvious that it is hard to contain the excitement while decorating the best part of the house i.e. the living room. And that is where you can go extremely wrong. Don’t go overboard with the decoration. Try not to use too many wall hangings, plants, artworks, or any other decorative pieces. It makes the place look smaller and chaotic. Use selected items which can provide you the feeling of relaxation because less is always more.
- Clutter here and there – Cluttering is ugly. Nobody likes to come back to a messy house after a tiring day at work. So, if you get some bonus storage space, won’t you love it? Surely, you would. Create ample (sneaky!) storage spaces in your house so that you can just lift the lid and throw in all the clutter inside and achieve a clean house.
- Fear of experimenting – When it comes to the walls of your house, do not fear to experiment with different types of wall panels. When you do not play with them, the walls of your house look monotonous. So, to avoid the monotony, you can try faux interior stone wall panels and 3D wall decor panels. In case, you want to install it yourself and do not know how to do it, click here ‘how to install 3D wall panels’. Some people use stainless steel panels for commercial kitchens. If you are a plant person, bamboo wall panels are just for you.
- Imbalance in furniture – When we go for furniture shopping, we try to get those which we have seen in the latest magazines. We often do not realize what looks good on those books may not match the aesthetics of our house. Buying too big or too small furniture is a very common mistake. So, learning to bring a balance in the arrangement of furniture is very important. For example, if there is a huge sofa in your living room, balance it out with a small coffee table made of glass.
- Too matchy-matchy – When we like any colour or a kind of pattern, we use the same shade everywhere in the house. From getting all the walls painted in that color to using items of the same color, that color becomes our life and that is the biggest mistake you can do. In order to make the room feel right, focus on the shades which can act as a contrast. Using woody tones and other shades of that particular color is a good option. In this way, the room appears to be multi-dimensional even without using a number of colors.
- Cables, cables everywhere – This is an extremely overlooked aspect of any house. Tangled, bare cables are too ugly to look at. They can also cause accidents by getting intertwined in someone legs. There are solutions to the problem of cables as well. You can create a cord cover on the wall which isn’t visible from the living room. Make sure to use a cover of the same color. You can make a labeled box wherein you can keep cords of different equipment safely.
- Too many photo frames – There are many sentiments connected with photographs but placing too many photo frames on the top of a cupboard is an old trend which makes the area look cluttered. You can create a photo wall and hang all your favorite photographs on it according to different dates and events and change them whenever you want.
- Boring lighting – Lighting plays an important role in making a room look prettier. Usually, people use the wrong kind of lighting. They tend to make huge mistakes here. They use too many lights and too fewer lights in different corners of a single room. Picking up bulbs with wrong temperatures is a mistake too. Dimmers are an affordable yet easy replacement for the light bulbs. They can be lit according to the mood and are easy to replace, too.
- Bye, bye fake plants – Plants are adorable and affordable. We go for fake plants as we think they don’t need any kind of maintenance and care. But we forget that dust particles are more likely to settle on such fake plants. Not taking proper care of faux landscaping results in a tacky looking room. To avoid that, buy real plants which you can take care of easily.
- Going with the trend – Your house is your own canvas. Decorate it the way you want. It does not matter if you have a classy choice or a girly one, you can never go wrong with the things you like. Make sure you love the things you are decorating your house with. Just don’t buy them because you think they are in the trend right now. If you want to paint the walls pink, then do it. If you want the ‘bare brick’ effect on your wall, then what are you waiting for? Life is too short to have any regrets, right?
Do not be afraid to take any chances because it is your own house and you have the rights to design it your way. To correct a mistake, you do not need a lot of money. Creativity is what it requires. It is okay to commit mistakes because practice does make a man perfect.
